Executed in 1913. In 1913, the young artist Egon Schiele, recently released from prison where he was held on charges of public immorality, began to experiment with unusually posed subjects. Having received backlash for his drawings of nude models, Schiele sought ways to complicate the human form and present his own novel approach. Subjects from this period are often shown bent and contorted, their faces sometimes hidden from view in order to showcase the artist's skilled rendering of perspective.
In the present work, Schiele's subject appears kneeling on a cloth in a vulnerable position. Here, the artist focuses on the precise rendering of the young woman's feet and legs, which are sensitively drawn from life. The woman's blouse takes on a more geometric form, a departure from the realistic approach for which Schiele became known, which reflects the impact that the emergent Cubist movement must have had on him. The angular rendering of the subtly colored blouse combined with the more realistically drawn torso and legs showcases the signature style which would become characteristic of the mature artist.
