Executed in 1930.
The present work is related to Dalí’s seminal publication of La Femme visible (1930), an illustrated book where the artist lays out his theory for the “paranoiac critical method.” The drawings included in the publication are highly sexualized and at times disquieting. Butterflies feature prominently throughout Dalí’s oeuvre, as representations of metamorphosis, transformation, and the fragility of life. Though in the present work no butterflies appear in the composition, only the net used by lepidopterists is depicted, leaving the true meaning of the work to be pondered.
