Executed in 1944. Foy’s paintings can be described as belonging to “hyper-realism," a combination of Surrealism and Magic Realism. This early gouache on paper uses trompe-l'œil to invite the viewer into a fantastical scene filled with intrigue. Foy was recently the subject of a solo exhibition at the Menil Collection in Houston, Hyperreal: Gray Foy, which celebrated two recent gifts to the Menil Drawing Institute of nearly 80 drawings by the artist.
