Lee (Elizabeth) Miller (American, 1907 - 1977) was a model and photographer. She moved to New York City in 1926 to study at the Art Students League and soon became a fashion model, appearing on the cover of Vogue magazine at age nineteen. After working with established photographers, including Horst P. Horst and Edward Steichen, Miller was encouraged to develop her own photographic practice. In 1929 she moved to Paris and met Man Ray, quickly becoming his studio assistant, model, and lover. She played a crucial role in the development of Man Ray’s solarization technique, the result of a darkroom accident which she and Man Ray subsequently perfected. Miller returned to New York in the 1930s and opened her own photography studio. She later documented the war efforts in London during World War II, the Normandy landings, and the liberation of several concentration camps.
