Executed in 2005. John Baldessari’s Prima Facie (Second State): Kind explores the relationship between text and image and captures an “at first sight” impression of an actor’s facial expression. Interpreting the meaning of the actor’s sideways glance and slight smile as “KIND,” Baldessari then leaves ample room for the viewer to analyze her countenance as she stands frozen in time. As her complexities emerge and her demeanor changes, the dissonance between text and image grows. In summarizing his Prima Facie series (2005-07) Baldessari rhetorically asks, “Can one match accurately a facial expression to a word?… Our judgment is “prima facie,” or "at first sight.”
