Painted in 1964. Untitled (Blues Away) is characteristic of Joan Mitchell’s gestural paintings and belongs to a suite of fourteen small scale works known as “14 Stations on Paris Subway,” executed in 1964 and 1965. Inspired by earlier abstract compositions of trees, the “Paris Subway” paintings are dominated by floating central forms resembling puffs of smoke emanating from subway trains, a distant memory of the artist while traveling through Paris. Composed of thick layers of impasto, Untitled (Blues Away) is filled with bright, jewel-like brush-strokes of blue, red, and orange, creating a dynamic tension between the central mass and its surrounding fields of creamy white and gray contrasts. Examples from this series are represented in important public collections, including the Yale University Art Gallery and the Kreeger Museum in Washington D.C.
