André Breton (French, 1896 - 1966) was an influential writer and original member of the Dada group who went on to establish the Surrealist movement. He was a founder and co-editor of Littérature with Louis Aragon and Philippe Soupault, and he published the Manifeste du Surréalisme in 1924. Breton worked across various media, including collage, printmaking, and writing. His ideas around tapping the unconscious as a tool for self-expression, influenced by the psychoanalytic writings of Sigmund Freud, served as the conceptual building blocks for the Surrealists. Man Ray would make numerous portraits of Breton, and they maintained a mutual admiration and affection for each other.
