Princesse Marthe Bibesco (Romanian-French, 1886 - 1973) was a Romanian aristocrat who enjoyed a successful literary career. She was an avid reader of classical literature, history, and took a keen interest in European politics. In 1908 she published her first novel, Les huits paradis, a travel documentary based on a diplomatic trip to Persia by automobile with her husband Prince Georges-Valentin Bibesco, which was followed by several other acclaimed works. The princess befriended literary figures such as Edith Wharton, Marcel Proust, Jean Cocteau, and Anatole France, and it was likely through this social circle that she met and posed for Man Ray.
