André Derain (French, 1880 - 1954) was a respected artist and landscape painter, who along with his teacher Henri Matisse, developed the artistic movement known as Fauvism, which foregrounded the primacy of pure, liberated color. The 1920s marked the pinnacle of his success, and he was given major exhibitions internationally. Derain was photographed on several occasions by Man Ray during his first sojourn in Paris, and the two shared a mutual love of cars.
