Ernest Hemingway (American, 1899 - 1961) was a legendary writer remembered for his terse, powerful prose and his reputation as the embodiment of machismo, based on his experience as a war reporter. Hemingway arrived in Paris in 1921, shortly before he wrote influential works such as The Sun Also Rises (1926), which chronicled the disillusionment of the so-called Lost Generation after World War I. Hemingway was introduced to Man Ray through their mutual friend Robert McAlmon and brought to his studio, where several portraits were produced between 1923 and 1928.
