Robert McAlmon (American, 1895 - 1956) was a writer and publisher. He entered a marriage of convenience with the lesbian English novelist Annie Winifred Ellerman, better known as Bryher, and he moved with her to Paris in 1921. Using money from his father-in-law, he founded Contact Editions in Paris in 1923, which published work by Gertrude Stein, Ernest Hemingway, James Joyce, Mary Butts, Kay Boyle, Bryher and others. He also published his own work, much of which was about American life. His marriage to Bryher ended in 1927, and he returned to the United States in 1940 where he remained for the rest of his life.
