Augustus John (Welsh, 1878 - 1961) was an important Post-Impressionist landscape painter in Great Britain leading up to World War I, but turned to portraiture in the conflict’s aftermath. John often visited Paris and painted writers, artists, and cultural luminaries in a style that foregrounded psychological impact and intensity. Man Ray photographed John in 1923 and captured his famously wayward embrace of a bohemian lifestyle.
