Jean Wiéner (French, 1896 - 1982) and Clément Doucet (Belgian, 1895 - 1950) were well-known pianists and composers. Wiéner trained at the Conservatoire de Paris, where he worked with Erik Satie. He then went on to a successful career as a concert impresario, composer and pianist. After working at the Gaya bar, he later became the house pianist at Le Bœuf sur le Toit. In 1924, he met Clément Doucet (who succeeded him at Le Bœuf) and the duo entered the world of popular music. Already a jazz enthusiast, Wiener found fame with Doucet in the music halls of Europe as a piano duo, performing under the name “Wiéner and Doucet,” in which they performed classical music, hot dance, and jazz. The duo recorded many compositions between 1925 and 1937. Man Ray was a regular at Le Bœuf sur le Toit, where he often drank with Erik Satie and Max Ernst, and several of his images feature Wiéner and Doucet.
