Joella Loy (British, 1907 - 2004) was the daughter of poet Mina Loy. With her mother and sister, she moved to Paris in 1923. In 1927, she married Julien Levy, with whom she moved to New York City and founded the Julien Levy Gallery in 1931. Following her 1942 divorce from Levy, she met Bauhaus artist and typography designer Herbert Bayer, and she married him in 1944. The couple moved to Aspen in 1946, and partly through their efforts the city became a center of culture and ski resort. They moved to Montecito, California in 1974. Following her husband’s death in 1985, she became the manager of the Bayer estate, continuing her life-long role as a promoter of artists. This is the only known portrait of Loy by Man Ray.
