Rose Wheeler (American, 1891 - 1940) was an actress who married successful stockbroker Arthur Solomon Wheeler, who amassed a large fortune on Wall Street. The couple moved to Paris and became important patrons during the 1920s, supporting artists, writers, and filmmakers, including Man Ray. Rose sat for several portraits between 1926 and 1929 and starred in Man Ray’s film Emak Bakia (1926), alongside Kiki de Montparnasse and Jacque Rigaut. Her husband lost his fortune in the 1929 Wall Street crash and they moved to Germany. After Arthur’s tragic death in an automobile accident, Rose returned to Paris in the 1930s, fearing the rise of anti-Semitism. She died shortly after in 1940, possibly as a result of anti-Jewish persecution.
