René Crevel (French, 1900 - 1935) was a writer born in Paris. His father committed suicide when René was fourteen, which resulted in severe trauma that influenced his life and career. Crevel sat for Man Ray and other photographers, such as Dora Maar and Rogi André on several occasions. A committed Surrealist and communist, he took his own life in 1935 at the age of thirty-five, shortly after the Surrealists were expelled from the first International Congress of Writers for Defense and Culture, resulting from an argument between André Breton and Soviet writer Ilya Ehrenburg.
