The first dancehalls opened in Paris in 1921, creating a whole new kind of nighttime entertainment which would define the Jazz Age. The dancehalls provided employment to many women, allowing them to experience liberation both through earning a wage and through engaging with a new language of movement. The spectacle of the dancehall and the beauty of the dancers provided inspiration to many Modern artists, including Man Ray who made many portraits of dancers in motion throughout his time in Paris.
