Conceived in 1939 and produced in 1983 in an edition of 30 plus 2 artist's proofs and 2 prototypes. The present work is number two from the edition and was modeled after a drawing by Oppenheim from 1939. It was designed in collaboration with Thomas Levy with the tabletop being executed by Helmut Sasse in Hamburg, Germany. The original table was first displayed in an exhibition of avant-garde furniture in Paris in 1939, organized by René Drouin and Leo Castelli.
In this work, Oppenheim transforms a prosaic utility object into a fantasy, creating a table that is supported by the bronze feet of a bird, and marked with 13 individual imprints of birds’ feet on its surface.
