James Joyce (Irish, 1882-1941) was an influential writer remembered for his novels such as A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916) and Ulysses (1922), as well as the short-story collection Dubliners (1914). Joyce’s work is regarded for its innovative use of language, dialogue, and social frankness. Man Ray photographed Joyce in 1922, for publicity relating to the publication of Ulysses, and the author appears with a downcast gaze, likely due to his sensitive and degenerating eyesight.
