Georges Braque (French, 1882 - 1963) who along with his friend and colleague Pablo Picasso, played a crucial role in the development of Cubism. Their intense collaboration between 1907 and 1914 resulted in works that challenged the illusionistic role of painting and the materiality of paint. Braque fought and was wounded in World War I but returned to art-making, focusing almost exclusively on still lifes. Man Ray made several portraits of Braque after the latter achieved considerable critical and financial success. Braque’s status is evident in the photographs, where the older artist often appears smart in tailored suits.
