Erik Satie (French, 1866 - 1925) was an avant-garde composer and pianist closely aligned with the Dada and Surrealist movements. His unconventional musical compositions, which tended to disregard traditional form and tonal structures, represent a formal break with 19th Century French Romanticism. Satie met Man Ray in 1921 at the artist’s first exhibition in Paris held at La Librairie Six, and the two developed a cordial friendship and mutual admiration.
