Executed in 2006.
Tara Donovan has long explored the phenomenological qualities of her chosen materials, which largely consist of modest, mass-produced goods such as paper plates, plastic cups, and rubber bands. She assembles these materials in a way that mimics organic growth and as a result, they come to life and transform into sculptural compositions that generate dynamic texture and atmospheric effects. In the present work, seemingly infinite multitudes of paper plates assembled in groups of sphere-like units conjure a wide range of imagery – from cellular growths to geologic formations – and transcend this base ready-made material into something sublime. In Untitled (Paper Plates), 2006, the monochromatic white palette of the plates assumes an attitude that speaks to both classical antiquity and the natural world.
Donovan’s many accolades include the prestigious MacArthur Foundation “Genius” Award in 2008, and in 2005 she was the recipient of the first annual Calder Prize, among others. Her work is included in numerous international public and private collections.
