Keith Haring
This pulsating black and white drawing executed on a page included in a desk calendar, represents a characteristic example of Keith Haring’s signature style, composed of bold lines and simplified forms. A large pair of scissors dominate the composition, with the artist’s highly recognizable motifs – including radiating babies, barking dogs, and snakes – populated throughout the densely packed space.
The sense of immediacy and playfulness engendered by the drawing is communicated not only through Haring’s choice of surface, but with his graphic, bold linework that references the visual language of comics, cartoons, and graffiti tags. The work is a prime example of Haring’s ability to bridge high and low art forms, to create universally appealing and accessible artworks. In the upper right corner, a dedication that reads “For Paolo” is visible. It is possible this is in reference to friend and fellow street artist Paolo Buggiani, which gives the present work a personal yet poignant touch, as Haring would tragically die only a few months after its completion.
