Ditto Armchair comes from Robert Stadler’s Ditto series, in which he sought to create a visual landscape that blurs the lines between the natural and the artificial. These works derive from his PDT or pierre de taille series; however, rather than presenting a rough, raw surface, Ditto Armchair is almost unnaturally smooth. The regal authority of its design is underlined by Stadler’s use of Bardiglio Imperiale marble. In the Ditto Armchair, he takes the mundane and elevates it into a beautiful work of art.

Stadler’s Ditto series, including the present work, were exhibited in 2022 at the Glass House in New Canaan, Connecticut, designed by American architect Phillip Johnson. Placed upon the hillside alongside the Glass House, the three Ditto works (Ditto Chair, Ditto Armchair and Ditto Low Table) presented a dialogue between Stadler’s heavy, sculptural furniture and Johnson’s bright, seemingly weightless structure. His works are included in various institutions around the world, including the Museum for Applied Arts / Contemporary Art, Vienna, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain, Paris and Vitra Design Museum, Weil am Rhein, amongst others.
