Executed in 2022.
Ian Collings is an American sculptor and designer based between California and Costa Rica. Collings was greatly influenced by his time spent living in the rainforest of Central America, which resulted in a robust body of work greatly tied to the natural world and organic forms. The artist’s Refigured series is meant to challenge “conventional notions of function and use by asserting concept as function and intention as purpose.” [1]
Constructed from orange calcite, these works reflect the audiences’ metaphysical connection with Earth. Each polished surface reflects the variegated natural wonders innate to the material itself. Collings states, “The rocks I carve are part of the earth, the earth is part of the cosmos. In this sense I suppose I’m carving parts of the cosmos.” [2]
