Executed in 1946.
In this scene of primordial chaos, Tanguy depicts biomorphic “ice plants” in a state of becoming. Surrounded by a dark space with clusters of white spots, massive, interlocked forms appear to float in space, suggesting a supernatural or alien world. This “inscape” is rooted in Tanguy’s Surrealist plumbing of the unconscious, taking abstract forms from the natural world and transforming them into recognizable yet strange symbols.
