Oiseau de Jardin (2004) exemplifies François-Xavier Lalanne iconic zoomorphic Surrealism. The artist found inspiration in animals and their symbolism throughout his oeuvre—as he explains, “Animals are at the center of our vocabulary because they are so varied… we have invented an entire dictionary of metaphors for them… and also everyone can recognize animals throughout the world, you don’t have to explain what they are or mean.” [1] As demonstrated by the present work, Lalanne transformed materiality into fantastical sculptural forms, based in reality but infused with wit and humor.
