Each work has a unique composition and was given as a Christmas gift by the Kunstmuseum Bern. This work was executed in the late years of Oppenheim's career when she began experimenting with spray paint as a print medium. This allowed her to alter the composition of each work while maintaining the core stenciled elements of the design.
Meret Oppenheim (German-Swiss, 1913–1985) was a multidisciplinary artist whose work embodied tenets of Dada and Surrealism. Introduced to the writings of Carl Jung as a teenager, she became interested in the analysis of dreams, which proved pivotal in her development as an artist. In 1932 Oppenheim moved from Switzerland to Paris, where she studied painting. Soon afterward she met Jean Arp and Alberto Giacometti, who together invited her to exhibit with the Surrealists. Her 1936 assemblage Object, a fur-lined cup, saucer and spoon, became an iconic symbol of Surrealism and, in 1946, the first work by a female artist acquired by the Museum of Modern Art in New York.2of 2
